Insight & Vice
In this ink drawing, "Insight and Vice," I stripped down to a bare surrealism to probe the tension between our clear-sighted potential and the habits that blur it. The eye in the piece—a detailed, lifelike sentinel—pierces through a tear in the canvas, symbolizing a breakthrough in perception.
I focused on rendering the eye with precision, hoping to evoke the raw emotion and complexity of sight. In contrast, the hand and the cigarette it holds present a stark, simple image of self-sabotage. The ash, captured mid-fall, speaks to the transience of our lesser choices.
This piece is meant to be a visual confrontation, pitting the eye's depth against the flat destruction of the cigarette. It's about the clash within us: our capacity for deep understanding against the pull of our own destructive tendencies.
With "Insight and Vice," I wanted to create an immediate, visceral reaction, challenging the viewer to acknowledge how our vices can cloud our inner vision. It's a call to self-reflection, to recognize and perhaps rethink the habits that obscure our clarity.
