Tears of Color
This painting, which I've titled "Tears of Color," is a mixed-media piece that merges watercolor with ink to explore the raw emotions conveyed through a single expression. The subject's face is captured in a state of open-mouthed surprise or exclamation, with a single tear of gold and blue running down, blending the tear with the aesthetic of classical statuary weeping vibrant hues instead of clear drops.
The use of watercolor is intentionally loose, allowing the colors to bleed into one another, creating a sense of movement and fluidity. The gold tear symbolizes value and weightiness often associated with emotions, while the blue might represent a cooler, more reflective state of mind.
In stark contrast, the ink outlines are sharp and definitive, giving structure and grounding the subject in reality. The eyes are particularly expressive, wide and capturing a moment of intense emotion or realization. The lips are rendered with a pop of color, emphasizing the focal point of expression.
The piece speaks to the complexity of our emotions and the beauty that can be found even in moments of vulnerability or sadness. It challenges the viewer to look beyond the surface and to interpret the mingling of colors and the expression of the subject as a statement on the human experience—multifaceted, vibrant, and deeply moving.
